My second hike this year was up the hieroglyph trail on the east side of Phoenix. I’ve done this hike a few times, but people were posting the waterfalls up there and honestly I had FOMO. I knew it would be busy, but every time I go up there it’s dry – and who’s doesn’t love a waterfall in the desert??
The hike is not hard. It’s not long. It is popular. On a Wednesday morning there were 3 large groups waiting to go up the mountain. Yep, they are back. Snowbirds. I just have to keep reminding myself there are waterfalls up there.

The trail head says Hieroglyphic Trail to the Petroglyphs. That got me thinking what’s the difference? Are they not all drawings or stories carved on the rocks?? This is a google learning moment.
This is what I discovered.

So Heiroglyphs are pictures representing words or language and petroglyphs are just pictures carved into the stone.

Well I may not be able to tell the difference between the two but they are amazing to see. Thinking that these drawings were made thousands of years ago is really cool.

Oh and the small water falls in the desert were amazing!!
All the people on the trail, not so much.
